Why is active shooter training important for organizations?

Active shooter incidents can happen anywhere and escalate rapidly. Proper training equips individuals with the skills to recognize warning signs, make quick decisions, and respond effectively—whether by escaping, evading, or taking defensive action. This training helps businesses, schools, healthcare facilities, and public spaces prepare for unpredictable situations.

How long is an AVERT certification good for and how often should we train our staff?

AVERT certification is valid for two years. We recommend training staff annually or every two years and maintaining a workplace violence program as required by OSHA [section 32.0.2(1)]. Clear policies and procedures should be reviewed and updated annually.

How long does active shooter training take?

The duration varies based on the course format and level of instruction required. Training typically includes a mix of hands-on exercises, situational awareness drills, and emergency response techniques, ensuring participants leave with practical skills they can apply immediately.

Course Length:

100% in-person sessions last approximately 3 hours.

Blended learning sessions (combination of online and in-person) last approximately 1.5-2 hours. Blended are optimal - the in-person session is about half the length of the 100% in-person course.

All courses include hands-on training, realistic drills and education with encouraging tips and feedback.

Class sizes are limited to 15 people or less so that all participants will leave the AVIRT program with the confidence to respond with appropriate action if an active violence or life-threatening situation arises.
